There are eight groups of people who are eligible to receive zakat

It is important to give zakat to those who are eligible to receive it. The recipients of the zakat are the following eight groups mentioned in the 60th ayah of Surah al Tawba:

"The alms are only for the poor and the needy, and those who collect them, and those whose hearts are to be reconciled, and to free the captives and the debtors, and for the cause of Allah, and (for) the wayfarers; a duty imposed by Allah. Allah is knower, Wise." (Surah al Tawba: 60).

As to your friend who is in need of money for marraige;

If he is in one of the following groups mentioned in the ayah, there is no harm in giving your zakat to him. These eight groups and their explanations are as following:

1. The poor

2. The needy (extremely poor)

3. Collectors of zakah

4. Those whose hearts are to be reconciled

5. Slaves, captivates

6. Debtors

7. Fighters in the Way of Allah's (swt) holy service (fee sabeel illah)

8. The travelers.

Who are the poor?

In Islam, the poor are those whose property are below “the amount of Nisab” or as much as the value of Nisab, but not enough for their basic necessities.

In Islam a person is accepted as rich on condition that he owns one of the followings which are also the “amount of nisab”: 80,18 gram gold or money or commercial property costing as much as 80,18 gram gold; 40 sheep or goats; 30 cattle; 5 camels.

Who are the needy?

The needy are extremely poor people who possess no wealth whatsoever.

Who are the collectors of zakah?

They are the officers appointed by an Islamic Head of State or Government to collect zakat and zakat al fitr from the public. They are eligible to receive zakat even though they are wealthy.

Who are those whose hearts are to be reconciled?

They are those indicated by Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) as eligible to pay zakah for three reasons:

1. To reconcile their hearts to Islam and enable them to come to believe in Islam.

2. To prevent them from giving harm to Islam.

3. To strengthen their faith and enable them to proper Muslims.

Who are the slaves?

This group includes the slaves whose masters have agreed to set them free on the condition of a payment of a fixed amount. Zakat may be used to purchase their freedom.

Who are the debtors?

Debtors are those whose debts are above their property so that they are unable to pay their debt.

Who are the fighters in the way of Allah (swt)?

They are the poor soldiers who have dedicated themselves to fight in the way of Allah (swt) to dignify the glory of Islam.

Who are the travelers?

Travelers are those who stranded far from their homes, their properties and unable to reach their money. They are eligible to receive zakat even though they are wealthy at their residences.

Assalamalaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

In this Post i have some brief explanation and useful links to share In Sha Allah that can help us learn about salatul witr and its importance.

Witr means odd i.e. 1, 3, 5 etc. Some pray 3 raka’ats while some pray 1 raka’at. Which one is correct? The answer is given in the following hadith:

Abu Ayyub Al-Ansari narrated that Rasool-Allah (PBUH) said: “The Witr is a right upon every Muslim, so whoever likes to perform Witr with 5 raka’ats then let him do so. And whoever likes to perform Witr with 3 raka’ats, then let him do so. And whoever likes to perform Witr with one, then let him do so.”

(Hadith No. 1422, Book of Witr, Sunan Abu Dawud, Vol. 2)

The ‘witr’ prayers are not obligatory, but an extremely preferred Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (saws), and he (saws) time and again exhorted the believers to offer the witr prayers and make it the last prayer of the night.
ZAKAH : A beautiful act of worship

The word ‘zakah’ denotes the amount of wealth (usually 2.5%) a Muslim must pay to particular categories of underprivileged people, if their annual wealth exceeds a specific amount.

Zakat literally means 'to increase' or 'to cleanse'. In shariah, zakat means that fixed portion of wealth that an owner of nisab has to give annually to poor and needy Muslims - as prescribed in the Qur'an and Hadith.

Zakah is the third pillar of Islam. Linguistically, it means “to purify.” By paying zakah we purify our wealth by sharing it with others.

Zakah is neither a tax nor a charity, it is an obligation to fulfill, and something for which we will be accountable to Allah directly.

Zakah benefits the person who receives it but also the person who gives it. We should be grateful for the opportunity to increase our righteous deeds through it.

Zakah purifies our heart, because it goes against our selfish instincts to hoard wealth for ourselves. Whatever material comfort we have been given is a test for us. By paying zakah we acknowledge that our wealth is not our own, but a blessing to be shared.

Zakah ensures that the very poorest of society are protected from hunger and insecurity and the need for basic essentials. The giver embodies the spirit of social responsibility.

The benefits

Zakat not only purifies our wealth, but also purifies our heart from its own greed and selfishness.

Whatever material comfort we have been given is a test for us to see how we use it for the betterment of others. Paying zakat shows us that our wealth is not our own, but that others also have a right over our money - it is a blessing to be shared

Zakat ensures that the very poorest and needy of society are protected from poverty, hunger and provided with other necessities

Zakat benefits the giver. We should be grateful for the opportunity to pay zakat for the sake of our own selves, increasing our righteous deeds and drawing closer to Allah through this act of worship

The virtues

Zakat embodies the spirit of social responsibility on the part of the contributor, and the feeling of security and belonging on the part of the recipient as we all have our part to play when living together in society

Zakat is the most effective means to improve the economic condition of the poor and needy

The unfailing power of this effective measure of public interest stems from the fact that it is a divine injunction, an ordinance from God Himself. It is not a personal matter or a voluntary contribution; rather, it is an obligation, for the fulfilment of which one will be responsible to Allah directly

The giver of zakat is not doing a favour to the receiver. He should rather be thankful to the recipient, since he has been enabled by the recipient to fulfil his obligation

The nisab

Every person who is sane, an adult (reached puberty), Muslim and sahib-un-nisab must pay zakah as a duty. To be a sahib-un-nisab means you possess more wealth than the level of nisab for a period of one lunar year or more.

The nisab — the minimum value of wealth one must possess for zakah to become payable — is defined as 87.5g of pure gold or its equivalent value in money.

If you have zakah to calculate for agricultural land, livestock or any produce from a mine, the nisab for this is different and should be worked out with an Islamic scholar.

Every lunar year

Your zakah year begins on the date that your wealth first equals the nisab. Each year on that date your zakah should be calculated. If you can’t remember exactly when you became sahib-un-nisab then try your best to estimate it.

Alternatively, many people choose to pay within the month of Ramadan every year for the extra blessings and so they don’t forget to pay each lunar year. Note however this must be before a year has passed otherwise zakah will be overdue.

You can also pay zakah in monthly instalments. Simply calculate your zakah, divide this by 12 and set up a regular payment, specifying it as zakah. You can pay your zakah in monthly installments for the year ahead but not in arrears.

Zakah is always paid on the balance of assets owned on the zakahable date, not on fluctuating amounts during the year or on the average.

To find out the current monetary value of the nisab, visit muslimhands.org/zakah or call +44 (0)115 911 7222.l

Zakah is due on the following types of wealth:

•Gold and silver, including ornaments or jewellery containing gold and/or silver

•Cash held at home or in bank accounts

•Stocks and shares owned directly or through investment funds

•Money lent to others

•Business stock in trade and merchandise

•Agricultural produce

•Livestock animals such as cows, buffaloes, goats, sheep and camels

•Produce of mines

•Pensions

•Property owned for investment purposes

Shares and pensions
Paying zakah on stock and merchandise is obligatory. If you have shares in a particular company, paying zakah is obligatory on the current market value of the shares. If you are considered as having ownership in the

company’s assets to the value of your share, then you do not have to pay zakah on items that are exempt from zakah (such as machinery, furniture and building). If you’re unable to obtain these details, then you should pay zakah on the current market value of the whole share.

Pensions received by an individual after retirement are liable for zakah provided they are sahib-un-nisaab. Before retirement, an individual’s pension is not subject to zakah if the payment made to the pension policy is deducted from the salary at source, without passing

into the hands of the individual. For voluntary contributions to pensions, please consult a scholar.

If you qualify to pay zakah, it is also obligatory for you to perform the qurbani at the time of Eid al-Adha.

Your home and car

All assets owned for personal use and used to meet basic living expenses are exempt from zakah except for cash and items made from gold and silver. This means your home and personal car are not liable for zakah.

If you have a second property for investment purposes with the clear intention to keep it, it is not subject to zakah, but any profit from rental income is fully subject to zakah.

If you have a second house for investment purposes with the clear intention to resell it at a profit, you must pay zakah on it as it is considered a “stock in trade”. The entire value

of the property is subject to zakah.

Valuing jewellery

Gold and silver in whichever form are always subject to zakah. If metal items of personal use have less than half their content as gold or silver then they are not liable for zakah.

It is important to get jewellery accurately valued at a professional jewellers to account for the pure gold or silver content. When buying jewellery, ask for the gold and silver weight in grams to be marked on the receipt for future reference.

The market value of gold fluctuates. When calculating the value of your gold, you will need to know the current price of gold. This can be found online at sites such as goldline.co.uk, from your local goldsmiths or by calling us.

Zakah for businesses

Zakah is also payable on business interests as well as personal wealth. The amount of zakah payable on a business will depend on the type of business, the nature of the goods sold, profitability, stock levels and other factors.

It is strongly recommended to get specialist advice on calculating the amount of zakah due. Contact us and speak to our Zakah Team who will be able to help you with your business zakah calculations.

Zakah can be due on a business even if the business is not profitable or has debt obligations. Note that there can be tax advantages to making zakah donations directly from your business. Speak to our Accounts Department for further information.

“Who is he that will loan to Allah a beautiful loan, which Allah will double unto his credit and multiply many times? It is Allah who giveth (you) want or plenty. And to him you shall return”.

Al-Baqarah 2:245

Zakah is not payable on haram income (earned from forbidden means) The entire value of haram income must be given in charity.

A case study of calculating zakah

Miss Khan

Assets

Totals

Gold

• jewellery with pure gold @ 75g

• current market rate = £18.34/g*

75 x 18.34 =

£1375.50

Cash at bank

£1300

Shares

£210

TOTAL WEALTH

£2885.50

Nisab

87.5g of gold x £18.34* =

£1604.75

Miss Khan has more wealth than

the nisab (she is sahib-un-nisab)

Zakah liability (2.5%)

£2885.50 × 0.025 =

£72.14

To help you work out how much zakah you owe, there is a simple zakah calculator that you can download from here : muttaqun.com/zakatcalc.xls

Enter details such as how much cash, gold, silver, shares you own and find out how much zakah is payable.

The zakah calculator is designed to cover relatively simple cases

faced by individuals. If you own a business or have questions about how to calculate your zakah then please contact us.

* Please check the current market rate when calculating your own zakah.

Who can receive zakah?

In the Qur’an, surah 9, verse 60, the categories of people entitled to receive zakah are described:

1.the poor - those who have no income

2.the needy - those who may have an income but it is below a minimum requirement

3.employees of zakah - those who identify the destitute and handle zakah

4.sympathisers - those who might enter or who have already entered Islam

5.to free slaves

6.to relieve those in hardship under debt

7.for the cause of Allah

At Muslim Hands we take the responsibility of handling zakah extremely seriously as we understand this is more than just charity: it is worship.

Zakah donations are handled with the greatest care to ensure they reach eligible recipients quickly and securely.

Our latest projects are detailed online at muslimhands.org and in our annual Feedback Reports which you can order or view online.

Does God exist? If so, show me His shape.

2. What is takdir (fate)?

3. If shaitan (Devil) was created from the fire, why at the end he will be thrown to hell that is also created from fire.
On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him)
from the Prophet (PBUH), who said:
A prayer performed by someone who has not recited the Essence of the
Quran (1) during it is deficient (and he repeated the word three times),
incomplete. Someone said to Abu Hurayrah: [Even though] we are behind
the imam? (2) He said: Recite it to yourself, for I have heard the
Prophet (may the blessings and peace of Allah be up on him) say: Allah
(mighty and sublime be He), had said: I have divided prayer between
Myself and My servant into two halves, and My servant shall have what he
has asked for. When the servant says: Al-hamdu lillahi rabbi l-alamin
(3), Allah (mighty and sublime be He) says: My servant has praised Me.
And when he says: Ar-rahmani r-rahim (4), Allah (mighty and sublime be
He) says: My servant has extolled Me, and when he says: Maliki yawmi
d-din (5), Allah says: My servant has glorified Me - and on one occasion
He said: My servant has submitted to My power. And when he says: Iyyaka
na budu wa iyyaka nasta in (6), He says: This is between Me and My
servant, and My servant shall have what he has asked for. And when he
says: Ihdina s-sirata l- mustaqim, siratal ladhina an amta alayhim
ghayril-maghdubi alayhim wa la d-dallin (7), He says: This is for My
servant, and My servant shall have what he has asked for.

(1) Surat al-Fatihah, the first surah (chapter) of the Qur'an.

(2) i.e. standing behind the imam (leader) listening to him reciting al-Fatihah.

(3) "Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds."

(4) "The Merciful, the Compassionate".

(5) "Master of the Day of Judgement".

(6) "It is You we worship and it is You we ask for help".

(7) "Guide us to the straight path, the path of those upon whom You have
bestowed favors, not of those against whom You are angry, nor of those
who are astray".

Don’t focus too much on doing good things while
forgetting the pleasure of Allah swt. This means that you should not
put too much effort into doing good things that will not essentially win
over Allah’s full pleasure.

So many people get caught up in doing small deeds without even fulfilling the obligatory deeds first.

This religion was meant to be easy. Don’t overburden yourself with
small, stressful deeds. Better yet, focus on getting rid of all
impurities of the heart first in order to please Our Creator, then do
those deeds that will earn you ajr.

Get rid of things that are displeasing to Allah swt

Submit to Allah’s commands [fards] then the Sunnah

The biggest disease of the heart: Pride

There are three types of hearts Allah swt mentions in the Quran

-The Pure Heart (Qalb ul salem): This heart is free of impurities and
full of Allah’s pleasure. This heart is also filled with fear, fear for
disobeying Allah, fear of whether their good deeds will be accepted,
fear of the Punishment of disobedience, fear of not reaching Paradise
-The Sick Heart: This heart is stained with disease. When this heart
commits a sin, it tries to justify the sin instead of regretting/hating
it then repenting. Their desires overpower the pleasure of Allah swt.
They let the life of this dunya deceive them. This is usually the heart
of the hypocrite; the one that had knowledge but did not act upon it.
This heart has both belief and hypocrisy contained in itself.
-The
Dead Heart: This heart is the worst kind of heart. This heart does not
believe in Allah, it rejects all His signs, and fails to recognise that
Allah exists and that His signs are true.

Ramadan gives us a chance to purify our hearts, build a shield of taqwa and get rid of our desires.

Allah swt gives us Rammdan as a mercy. He locks up our biggest negative
influence- shaitan. So the battle becomes between you and yourself.

This Ramadan inshaAllah we must all make an effort to change. Let’s go
into Ramadan with the mentality that we will make a change. Ramdan is
known as the Birth of Mercy because that is the best time to get rid of
our desires and truly submit to Allah swt.

Ramadan is one
package. Every good thing you do should be increased this Ramadan. Not
only should you avoid eating, and drinking, but also bad habits such as
backbiting and the use of profanity, etc. Insha’Allah.

Our own actions turn away Allah’s mercy.

What we need to do:

Plan an atmosphere for ourselves in order to win over Allah’s pleasure.
This includes: turning off all technology, reading Quran with
understanding, submitting to Allah swt, etc.
Use Ramadan to its
fullest advantage. Use this time to let go of any sinful desires that
you might not have been able to before.
Focus on pleasing Allah swt, and only Him. Make an effort to struggle for His sake.
We must not only nourish our body, but our hearts as well.
We need to be willing to get rid of our own desires for the sake of Allah so that He may help us acheive our goal

Remember that every moment you struggle will be proof for you on the Day of Judgment.

May Allah swt help us make use of this Ramadan and use it to our full
advantage. And may we all make that change that will bring us closer to
Him, and may He swt make it easier on us to let go of all our desires
for His sake.

O you who believe! Whoever from among you turns back from their religion (Islâm), Allâh will bring a people whom He will love and they will love Him; humble (soft) towards the believers, stern towards the disbelievers, fighting in the Way of Allâh, and never afraid of the blame of the blamers. That is the Grace of Allâh which He bestows on whom He wills. And Allâh is All-Sufficient for His creatures' needs, All-Knower. 5:54

Umar ibn al-Khattaab (R.A. - may Allah be pleased with him)

Once a caravan came to Madinah, it had women and children too, with it. `Umar (R.A.) said to Abdul Rahman ibn `Auf, "Can you stand guard on them tonight?" So`Umar, the second caliph, and he, kept awake that night together, and kept vigil over the caravan.

During that nightly vigil they both offered Tahajjud (night) prayer as well. `Umar (R.A.) on hearing a baby's cry approached the mother and said, "Fear Allah and look after your child carefully." Saying this he came back to his own position. Once again he heard the baby crying, and went over to it's mother and gave her the same advice. During the last part of the night the child cried once again, `Umar (R.A.) came to its mother and said, "Woe to you! You appear not to be a good mother. How is it that your child could not sleep peacefully during the night." The woman little suspecting that she was speaking to the Amir (Commander/leader) of the believers said in reply, "May Allah bless you O man, you have pestered me several times during the night. I want to wean it forcefully but the child is intractable." `Umar (R.A.) asked her, "why wean it forcefully?" She said in reply, "Because `Umar (R.A.) grants allowance only for such children that have been weaned." `

Umar (R.A.) asked her, "How old is your child?" she told him it was only a few months old. And `Umar (R.A.) asked the woman not to be hasty in weaning her child. Umar (R.A.) then led the morning prayer in such a state that his weeping made the recital of the Quran inaudible and unintelligible. At the end of the prayer he said, "`Umar (R.A.) is ruined. He killed the children of the believers!" And at this, he ordered the crier to proclaim in the town of Madinah that the mothers should not wean their children only for the sake of allowance for the suckling. From now on, every child, suckling or weaned, shall receive a stipend. And it was also proclaimed throughout the length and the breadth of the Islamic state. Unparalleled in the Entire History of Mankind By Allah! The entire history of mankind is unable to produce such a brilliant and glorious incident. None among the civilizations of the world can present anypersonage like `Umar (R.A.). He kept awake the whole night, keeping guard over the caravan whilst the caravan slept in peace. And we should keep in mind that he was the head of the Islamic state, and wielded great authority and power that had conquered the then mighty empires of Rome and Persia.

He drew the attention of the crying child's mother to her baby and asked her to restrain it from crying by taking good care of it. Is there anyone who can mete out that treatment to the children in a passing Caravan, like `Umar(R.A.)? Who is there among the greatest personages of the history of mankind who can even touch the great human consciousness of `Umar?

Sayyidna Umar, Radi-Allahu anhu, was
the second Khalifah of Islam. He was from the Khulafa-e-Rashidun (the Rightly
Guided Caliphs). Sayyidna Umar, Radi-Allahu anhu, was a great administrator
whose examples are unparalleled not only in Islamic history but also in the
history of modern civilization.

Sayyidna Umar, Radi-Allahu anhu, was
born in the year 582 C.E. In his youth, he was a famous wrestler and orator and
was an expert in horse riding. He was well educated and also among the first
people in Makkah who knew how to read and write. He gained a vast amount of
experience by being a judge, a diplomat, and a very good public speaker. As a
young man, he earned his livelihood by trade. His keen sense of justice and
towering personality gave him an outstanding place in history. Devotion to
duty, and fairness were his guiding principles.

As a Khalifah, his empire extended
over Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Palestine, Egypt and other places. However, he
was not at all arrogant in his behavior towards others.

All citizens were equal before law. On
a number of occasions, the Khalifah appeared personally to defend himself in
the public court of justice just like any other defendant. In a dispute with an
ordinary citizen, Sayyidna Ubayy-Ibn Ka'ab, Sayyidna Umar, Radi-Allahu anhu,
appeared as a defendant in the court of Sayyidna Zaid-Ibn-Thabit at Madinah.
Sayyidna Zaid, Radi-Allahu anhu, wanted to pay respect to him but Sayyidna
Umar, Rad-Allahu anhu, told him that this amounted to partiality. Thus under
Sayyidna Umar, Radi-Allahu anhu, the principles of justice and equality were
fully observed. In the same case, Sayyidna Ubayy, Radi-Allahu anhu, wanted
Sayyidna Umar, Radi-Allahu anhu, to take oath, but the judge wanted to spare
him because of the dignity of his office. Seeing this, the Khalifah admonished
him, “You cannot be a just judge until a common man is equal to the Khalifah
before you.” During that era, no one was above law. Even the Khalifah was
questioned by the common man.

The main sources of revenue were:

1. Zakat – 2.5% of wealth for the poor. This was only applicable on Muslims.

2. Jizya - defence tax paid by non-Muslims living on Muslim lands (dhimmis).
However, the poor, the sick and crippled, women, children, aged, priests, and
monks were exempted from this.

3. Ushr – a special land tax on especially large holdings. (one tenth of

5. Ghanimah - one-fifth of the war booty

6. A tax on non-Muslim merchants and traders (because they didn’t pay Zakat,

From the Bait-al-Mal, spending was made for the welfare of the people as well
as for the poor and needy. The weak and disabled, both Muslims and non-Muslims,
were granted allowances. A person who became an invalid or too old to earn his
living received maintenance allowance from the Bait-al-Mal.

Children without guardians were

worked day and night to provide food to the starving people. He used to go out
in the night and visit various places to make sure that everybody was content.

The canals for irrigation purposes
were also built from the public revenue. During Sayyidna Umar's, Rad-Allahu
anhu, reign a canal was made which joined the Nile to the Red Sea. This canal
facilitated transport of grains from Egypt to the Arabian Peninsula.

Sayyidna Umar, Radi-Allahu anhu, also
gave freedom of religion to the Jews and Christians living in the Muslim
Empire. He allowed them to stay there if they so wished and nobody could
interfere in their religious affairs. To those who desired to migrate he
ensured a safe journey up to the borders. Sayyidna Umar, Radi-Allahu anhu, also
gave compensation for their properties and other facilities.

Radi-Allahu anhu, achievements was the establishing of the Police Department.
The police force at that time was known as “Ahdath” and the police officers
were known as the “Sahibul Ahdath.” Sayyidna Umar, Radi-Allahu anhu, gave the
following instructions to the police officers:

“Keep peace in the area. Let not the

should build any house on roads so as to hinder the passage way. No one should
overload an animal. Nobody is allowed to sell or buy liquor.”

As well as establishing the police
force, Sayyidna Umar, Radi-Allahu anhu, also built jails, forming the first
jails in Arabia. He bought five houses in Makkah and used them as prisons. He
also set up jails in some districts of various provinces.

Sayyidna Umar, Radi-Allahu anhu, fully
organized the army, which was composed of infantry, cavalry and archers. The
army was broadly divided into standing and reserve. The standing army was a regular

during the time of war. Intelligence and communications were also developed.

The title of a Provincial Governor was “Wali”. As well as being the chief
administrator of his province, the Wali was also the religious leader being
well-versed in religion. In each province there were usually the following
officers besides the governor: The treasury officer (Sahib Baitul Maal), the
revenue collector (Sahib Kharaj), the chief police officer (Sahib Ahadath), and
the judge (Qazi). The provinces were divided into districts. Each district was
administrated by an officer called ‘Amil. All the governors and the high
officers of the provinces were called to Makkah every year on the occasion of
Hajj when Muslims from the entire area gathered there. Complaints against the
governors were recorded by the Khalifah and incompetent governors were removed
from office.

Sayyidna Umar, Radi-Allahu anhu, also
laid great stress on knowledge and learning. He made Islamic education
compulsory for everyone, both male and female. Thus, he was the first person to
introduce compulsory education. Education was also free for everyone and a
number of schools were built in cities and towns for public instructions.

It was due to his unconquerable will

Abu Bakr, Radi-Allahu anhu, as-Siddiq
was the first of the Muslims and the first khalifah of the Muslims. He was the
man who the Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, loved most. The Prophet,
Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, once said "..everyone hesitated before
accepting Islam except Abu Bakr, Radi-Allahu anhu". He was a man easily
overcome with weeping and he prayed to his Lord with a voice so soft that the
Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, questioned him about this, to which he
replied "..He with whom I speak will hear". He was frail and slight
of built and yet his actions exceeded the actions of any man, except the
Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam.

Aisha, Radi-Allahu anha, the daughter of Abu Bakr, Radi-Allahu
anhu, and the wife of the Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, said,
"While the head of Allah's messenger was on my lap on a moonlit night, I
asked "Messenger of Allah, has anyone done as many good deeds as there are
stars in the sky?" "Yes", he replied, "Umar, Radi-Allahu
anhu, has". I then asked how Abu Bakr's good deeds compared, and he
replied, "All Umar's good deeds are like one of Abu Bakr's good
deeds".

Abu Bakr, Radi-Allahu anhu's love for the Prophet, Sall-Allahu
alayhi wa sallam, knew no bounds. He accompanied the Prophet, Sall-Allahu
alayhi wa sallam, on the Hijrah to Madinah. They stopped at a cave called
"Thawr", and Abu Bakr, Radi-Allahu anhu, said, as narrated by Umar
ibn Khattab, "I swear by Allah that you (the Prophet) will not enter the
cave before I have done so, for if there is anything in it, I shall be attacked
by it, and not you." Then he entered the cave and swept it and found some
holes in the side of it. He tore up a piece of his garment and plugged the
holes with it. As there were still two remaining holes left, he thrust his feet
into them and told the Messenger of Allah to enter the cave. When he had done
so the Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, laid his head on Abu Bakr,
Radi-Allahu anhu's lap and went to sleep. One of Abu Bakr, Radi-Allahu anhu's
foot was stung by a creature in the hole, but he did not move for fear that the
Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, might awake. The effect of the poison
returned later on, and was said to be the cause of his death.

According to Umar, Radi-Allahu anhu, the day when the Prophet,
Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, died and the Arabs turned back from Islam and
refused to pay zakat, he said, "If they were to refuse me the nose-rope of
a camel, I would fight them over it". Umar, Radi-Allahu anhu, remarked, "Successor
of the Messenger of Allah, be affable and gentle to the people", to which
Abu Bakr, Radi-Allahu anhu, replied, "Have you, who were a powerful man
before Islam, become weak in Islam? The revelation has ceased and the
transaction has been made perfect. Is it to diminish while I am alive?."

Two years after becoming the first khalifah, Abu Bakr, Radi-Allahu
anhu, was seized with fever. After completing his affairs in this world he died
at the age of 63 with nothing but two pieces of cloth, in which he was buried.
As his end was near, he was heard to say "..O Allah, make me to die a man
of trust. Please take me to join the blessed, exalted ones."

A true believer is one who obeys and follows Allah and His Messenger (saws), loves everything that is pleasing to Allah and His Messenger (saws), and dislikes everything that dis-pleases Allah and His Messenger (saws).

It is indeed unfortunately true, that Bibi Aisha took a stand against Hadrat Ali (r.a.) in the Battle of Jamal. All the historians of Muslim History are unanimous in their opinion that Hadrat Ali (r.a.) was on the side of the Truth and those who opposed him were wrong. The Battle of Jamal was initiated because some unscrupulous political people, under the leadership of Marwan ibn Haqam, created a mis-understanding amongst the muslims which resulted in the Battle of Jamal. This was the result of a ‘fitnah’ created by the enemies of Allah and Islam, and some of the believers became victims to this ‘fitnah’.

Bibi Aisha was defeated in this battle by the forces of Hadrat Ali (r.a.), who recognized and realized that she and her supporters were mis-informed and were victims of a mis-understanding. Subsequently, after the battle, Hadrat Ali (r.a.) ordered that Bibi Aisha be escorted with respect and honor deserving to the ‘mother of the believers’. Bibi Aisha and the other true believers, who had taken a stand against Hadrat Ali (r.a.) in the Battle of Jamal, realized their mistake and apologized to Hadrat Ali (r.a.), who forgave them and always treated them with respect and honor. It is recorded in many books of history that in later years, whenever Bibi Aisha used to remember the ill-fated days of her stand against Hadrat Ali (r.a.) in the Battle of Jamal, she used to weep and cry, and ask forgiveness from Allah Subhanah.

Thus it was not as if that Bibi Aisha was always against Hadrat Ali (r.a.) and held animosity towards him and the descendants of the Prophet (saws), and his noble household. She was an avid supporter of Hadrat Ali (r.a.) and loved him and his family like all the other true believers.

This is a big propaganda and horrendous lie that only the Shias love Hadrat Ali (r.a.), and the rest of the muslims hate him! There is no muslim who does not love Hadrat Ali (r.a.). This noble soul grew up in the house and in the guardianship of the Messenger of Allah (saws), gave unlimited sacrifices for the deen of Islam, and lived all his life in the service of Allah, His Messenger (saws) and the deen of Islam. He was loved by Allah and His Messenger (saws), and it is a duty unto every believer to love him.

But some mis-guided muslims have gone too far in their love for Hadrat Ali (r.a.), and put this noble soul at par with the Messenger of Allah (saws), and sometimes even raise him to the position of a god with Allah! They invoke his name for everything, and even call him names like ‘mushkil-kusha’ (remover of perils), and ‘haajat-rawaa’ (the answerer of prayers); which are attributes that belong to Allah Subhanah Alone! They have even made the grave of this humble and noble soul a shrine and place of worship, and make pilgrimages to his burial site in Najaf! To raise and elevate a humble and noble slave-servant of Allah like Ameer ul Mumineen, Hadrat Ali (r.a.) to the position of the Messenger (saws), and Allah Subhanah is nothing but mis-guidance.

The Messenger of Allah (saws) said in an authentic narration about Hadrat Ali (r.a.): “You have the likeness of Isa ibn Maryam in my Ummah. The Christians loved him so much that they claimed he is the ‘son of Allah’, and the Jews hated him so much that they claimed to have killed him!” In later years, Hadrat Ali (r.a.) used to say: “Two kinds of people will be ruined on my account. One who loves me so much, that he will elevate me to a position of worship which does not rightfully belong to me; and the other will hate me so much that he will slander me.”

Your Question: What then are we to think of Bibi Ayesha?

Our opinion of Bibi Aisha should be in line with the declaration of Allah Subhanah in the Holy Quran:

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 33 Surah Ahzaab verse 6:Indeed, the Prophet is preferable for the believers to their own selves, and the Prophet’s wives are their mothers.

Allah has Himself honored the wives of the Prophet (saws) and given them the title of ‘umm-al-mumineen’ (mother of the believers). And we as muslims must love and honor everyone who were loved and honored by Allah and His Messenger (saws). It does not behove a believer to take an episode from Muslim History and make that an excuse to revile and curse any of the wives, or the noble companions of the Messenger of Allah (saws).

The deen of Islam was completed, the Quran revealed, and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (saws) was established at the time of the death of the Prophet (saws). Whatever happened after the death of the Prophet (saws) is the History of the Muslims, and this is in the knowledge of Allah Alone. Allah will not hold us accountable for the deeds of these people, nor ask us about them on the Day of Judgment. We will be asked about our deeds and what did we do for the cause of Islam.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 2 Surah Baqarah verse 134: They were a people who passed away. They shall receive the reward of what they earned, and you shall have the reward of what you will earn. And you will not be questioned as to what they did.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.
